Describe the issue you are experiencing

Automated backup fails almost every night with the following error:

[140192399060864] Error handling message: Error creating backup: 'BackupManager.do_backup_partial' blocked from execution, system is not running - freeze (home_assistant_error) from 192.168.4.12 (Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/132.0.0.0 Safari/537.36)

Restarting or repairing supervisor fixes it temporarily but the issue re-appears the next day.

What type of installation are you running?

Home Assistant OS

Which operating system are you running on?

Home Assistant Operating System

Steps to reproduce the issue

  1. Go to Settings > Systems > Backups.
  2. Run either a manual or automated backup.
For the sake of ruling out add-ons as an issue I un-ticked everything except for HA settings and changed add-ons to None
  3. Set the location to this system.
  4. Press create backup.
  5. Backup will fail immediately.

Anything in the Supervisor logs that might be useful for us?

System Health information

The automatic backup could not be created. Please check the logs for more information. Another attempt will be made at the next scheduled time if a backup schedule is configured.

Additional information

I don't think the issue is related to any particular release. It's been happening for about a year.

I didn't log anything previously because I was just using manual backups. It was easy enough to just restart supervisor when needed. However, I would really like to start using automated backups.

I have tried repairing supervisor and even rebuilding the VM running HAOS and restoring my config.

I haven't tried building a new instance of HA without restoring any config. I would really like to avoid that if I can.

Same issue for me

Error creating backup: 'BackupManager.do_backup_partial' blocked from execution, system is not running
is the error message I receive for every backup I am trying to execute
have performed repair of supervisor, restarted 1) HA 2) machine 3) Supervisor to no prevail.
Local or remote backup remains the same issue.

This typically means the Supervisor is already busy in some ways, potentially already taking a backup.

Can you share the full Supervisor logs as well (Settings > System > Logs, choose Supervisor on the top right).

Thanks. That make sense. It does say "Timeout waiting for signal" in the logs.

But I couldn't see any indication at what might be causing it.

Thanks for that. You sent me on the right way to find the problem.

Even it sounds a little bit like: Have you turned it off and on again. 😂

I had multiple issues. But the main issue was to attach a samba share and use it as primary storage location. As this share did not work it blocked the backup, and every following backup failed because there was another backup already in progress.

So, this will not solve the problem for the other ones that reported, that they have the same problem, but maybe this information can be helpful for them.

this is what is happening after I removed the remote NAs from the config, restarted HA and when trying to create a new full backup it failed.
I can see that @ 20:02:48 a backup job has started ( Do I see that right?)
and since the BackupManager is "busy"?

A full reboot of HA (OS level) and the backups run again....
Wondering how long this will last this time.
Checking tomorrow after the nightly full backup (again)

I also had an "old" backup tool installed for google drive. I removed that and installed a new tool, which adds the cloud storage as drive to HA for backup.
